The weather forecast for Cristy and Jamie’s wedding day was not great. It sprinkled all the way as I drove to the lovely Woodend Sanctuary, where they had planned to be married in the beautiful little grove of woods that makes the venue such an picturesque spot for weddings. But the skies looked like they were clearing up in time for their ceremony. Then, all of a sudden, they weren’t. It was sunny, then rainy, then sunny, then stormy and then sunny again. They rolled with the punches gracefully, moving their outdoor ceremony into the historic mansion’s foyer when the first downpour wouldn’t let up and squeezing outdoor portrait sessions in between the subsequent bursts of rain and hail throughout the day.

Cristy & Jamie took on much of the decorating for their nature- and beach-inspired wedding themselves. Cristy made the centerpieces, cleverly combining real squares of sod with whimsical pink tulips. One of her bridesmaids arranged tulip bouquets — and stashed them in a bucket from the Rita’s Ice shop that the groom owns. And Jamie’s best man served as officiant, emcee, coordinator and jokester. (He did a marvelous job at all four tasks!) By mid-afternoon, we were graced with some lovely light for photos of the newlyweds in the woodsy area where they were originally to have been married.

Here are a few of my favorites from their day:

A few flower details.

Cristy had a gorgeous beaded belt on her dress.

Cristy’s father walking her down the staircase-turned-aisle to start the ceremony.

I loved this page in the book that their friend who served as their officiant used during the ceremony.

Rain, rain, go away…

We managed to slip outside between showers for some beautiful — albeit a wee bit muddy — portraits.

I positively loved the light streaming through the trees at this clearing in the woods.

Happy pink tulips.

Cute little guests.

Congratulations, Cristy and Jamie. It was a pleasure working with you and your families!

When I first met with Victoria and Tim, Victoria said she wanted her wedding to be filled with lots of color — “bright and summery,” she explained. Her wishes could not have come more true. As she and Tim exchanged vows in the gorgeous gardens of the Meridian House in Washington DC,  absolutely perfect golden light poured through the trees. The bride and her bridesmaids carried bouquets of summery blooms, designed by Amaryllis, while the tables in the dining room and the grove for cocktail hour featured clusters of hydrangea and roses. And reception lighting, by Frost Lighting, as well as a four-tier wedding cake and individually tied sacks of macaroons at each guest’s place, both by Patisserie Poupon, added more pinks and oranges to the color palette for the day. Everything could not have been lovelier.

Here are some of my favorites from the day:

Victoria got ready at the Omni Shoreham Hotel. One good thing about getting dressed for your wedding in a really nice hotel is that the backgrounds are uncluttered for photos and there are usually great windows. Such was the case in the spot where Victoria’s mom, sister and friends worked on all the buttons on the back of her dress.

This was my first time shooting at the Meridian House and it instantly became one of my most favorite spots. In addition to creating the flower arrangements for the wedding, the team from Amaryllis strung up lanterns in the grove where guests gathered before the ceremony and for cocktails afterward. It was simply beautiful.

I loved how each bridesmaid’s bouquet was different but tied in with Victoria’s bridal bouquet.

And I love love loved this bridal bouquet.

Victoria estimated that she tried on 64 dresses to find this one by Rivini at Carine’s Bridal Atelier. I think it was worth the search! Here she is, looking gorgeous.

My friend and second shooter, Monica, captured this image of Victoria in the garden before the ceremony.

It was supposed to be unbearably hot and humid in DC on the wedding day. But it was pleasantly not quite as warm as predicted. And the bride and groom provided darling paper fans for their guests for the ceremony.

Finally, it was time to get married.

Monica was tucked away on the second floor of the house, shooting from a window to get this wonderful perspective during the ceremony.

For one of the readings, a friend of Victoria’s read a children’s story called A Lovely Love Story. The tale tells of a dinosaur and “the lovely other dinosaur.” Their friend adapted the story to fit the bride and groom. It was so charming.

I just love this next series of three images. Victoria is so expressive that she was a particular joy to photograph.

The exchange of vows, which Victoria and Tim wrote themselves.

I could not have asked for more perfect light during the ceremony.

I love how Tim is looking at Victoria here.

We shot family pictures and portraits of Victoria and Tim in the gardens, where the light kept getting better and better as we got closer to sunset.

I love this one.

And this one.

The grove was a perfect place for cocktail hour.

Victoria and Tim hired a guitarist, Levi Stephens, to play for the ceremony and cocktail hour. He was really talented and a wonderful alternative to the more common string musicians at weddings.

Professional lighting makes such a difference at receptions, particularly in many of the beautiful, but often dimly lit, historic venues in Washington. Frost Lighting provided wonderful uplighting in the rooms for dining and dancing.

Sweet little macaroons for guests.

Victoria and Tim’s relatives and friends offered a fabulous series of toasts to the newlyweds.

A little cake cutting.

A little dancing.

And, as Victoria and Tim put it on their invitations, a feast and merriment!

Congratulations, Victoria and Tim. It was an absolute joy to be with you on your wedding day!

I didn’t actually meet Maureen and Scott until their wedding day. But I was pretty sure their wedding would be fantastic from a few key details I gleaned from Maureen over the phone. First, her schedule mentioned that pedicabs would transport the wedding party from St. Patrick Catholic Church after the ceremony to Lafayette Square Park, where we would be taking photos before the reception at the historic Decatur House. “Pedicabs?” I asked. “You mean those bicycle cabs like they have in Times Square?” That was precisely what she meant. And she had the foresight to hire enough of them, from DC Pedicab, so that I could hop in, too, to shoot the three-wheeling ride. Secondly, she told me she had a surprise planned for her groom — but that it would depend on the Capitals ice hockey team losing in the playoffs the week of their wedding. Since Scott is a huge Caps fan, she arranged for the team’s mascot, Slapshot the Eagle, to greet guests at their cocktail hour. If the team advanced to the next round of playoffs, however, Slapshot would be on the road. She joked that she didn’t know what to root for — a loss that would ensure Slapshot’s attendance at her wedding or a win that would make her soon-to-be husband very happy. Imagining the fun photos we’d get with that kind of surprise for the groom, I volunteered to cheer for a Caps loss for her.

Here are some of my favorites from their fantastic, super-fun day:

Maureen got dressed at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Because the 216-year-old church is so historic, the new getting-ready room for brides was built directly onto the side of the church — meaning the wall of the room is the original stone exterior of the church. It’s really beautiful.

Maureen made quite the entrance.

The bride’s mom.

I love that Maureen and Scott wouldn’t even let go of each other’s hands when taking their seats in the sanctuary.

The wedding party.

Did I mention that the groom is from New Zealand? Yes, he (and his New Zealander groomsmen) did have a fabulous accent. Maureen referred to their wedding week as the Kiwi Invasion.

Channeling their inner Beatles.

Now for those previously mentioned pedicabs. What a fun way to get your wedding party across DC in traffic!

I love this next image, shot through the arm of the cyclist peddling the cab in which a bridesmaid and I were riding.

And we were off to Lafayette Square Park — just across from the White House — to shoot photos of the newlyweds and their wedding party.

A few portraits of Maureen and Scott, enjoying their newlyweddedness.

By the time we finished up, everyone was ready for a little air conditioning back at the Decatur House.

The couple’s color scheme of green and blue looked lovely against the pink flowers of the centerpieces by Ultra Violet Flowers. The couple’s caterers, 3 Citron, coordinated the linens, chairs, tables and other rentals with Perfect Settings. Everything was just stunning.

And about that gigantic eagle: I love this series of images, starting from the moment that Scott first spotted Slapshot and ending with Slapshot’s chivalrous gesture of kissing (pecking?) Maureen’s hand.

A little Kiwi pride.

One last funny story: Maureen and Scott invited the Obamas to their wedding. Neither the first couple nor their social secretaries responded (and it turned out that the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was the same night). So Maureen and Scott and their friends toted around a Barack bobblehead. He was with the bridesmaids before the ceremony. And on the head table at dinner.

And on the dance floor.

And even between the newlyweds when the bride’s brother refused to stop clinking his glass to signal his desire that she kiss her new husband. So she and Scott kissed Barack instead.

The groom thanked their guests and toasted his wife before the Blue Tips Rhythm Revue took over the mike and kept the dance floor packed the rest of the night with their mix of Motown, Soul and Classic Rock. They were fantastic!

Congratulations, Maureen & Scott. It was so, so much fun to be with you on your wedding day.

Michaelle and Mike were married New Year’s Eve in Puerto Rico. They had a gorgeous wedding and a wonderful day — except for the teeny tiny detail of their DJ. He failed to show up. Which, needless to say, put a bit of a damper on their reception. So when they returned home to northern Virginia, they decided to plan a DC-area wedding party.

I had shot some portraits of Michaelle before their wedding as a surprise gift for her hubby-to-be, so I was thrilled when she contacted me to see if I was available to photograph their reception. They lucked out with a spectacular spring day on Fort Myer, an Army base adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery. Yet, once again, their day did not go quite according to plan. This time, the bus transporting their friends and family to the military post for photos broke down, squashing our plans for fun outdoor portraits before the party. No matter. Michaelle & Michael shrugged it off and had a wonderful second party.

Here are some of my favorites from our afternoon together.

The bride, looking happy and gorgeous.

With her new husband’s children, Eva and Gabriel. They served as flower girl and best man and were just darling.

Eva’s toenails — and shoes! — reflected the color scheme for the day.

A special ring that Michaelle and Mike gave her for the wedding.

A few more of the beautiful bride…

Fully embracing her color scheme as well.

I love the excited looks on their faces here just before they were officially announced into the party.

A wonderfully choreographed first dance.

Lots of cute kids.

The father-daughter dance.

And a spin around the dance floor for the mother and son.

I always ask my clients whether there’s anything they want me to pay a little extra attention to. It’s a question that helps draw out the special little details of the day that couples are most looking forward to — that the bride designed her own cake topper or that a violinist playing at the ceremony is a close family friend or (and I’m not kidding here) that the mascot for the groom’s favorite professional sports team is scheduled to show up during cocktail hour as a surprise from the bride. When I asked this question of Michaelle, she told me about the choreography for their first dance and mentioned their cake cutting. Michaelle and Mike did not, it seems, love the cake cutting photos from their wedding in Puerto Rico. So I shot a bunch of them with their cake. I love love love this next series. I hope they love them, too!

A little icing to the nose.

And yes, she licks it off.

And still, Michaelle has eaten no cake!

Congratulations, Michaelle & Mike. It was so much fun to be with you for your take-two wedding reception. I wish you nothing but happiness in your marriage!

I was so excited for the glorious fall weather that was predicted for Claudia & Scott’s wedding in Washington DC. After being plagued by so much rain and/or overcast skies at so many weddings in a row this fall, I was completely yearning for some gorgeous, golden light to work with. Our afternoon in Lafayette Square — just across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House — could not have been nicer.

It kicked off a truly lovely wedding. The bride got ready at the Hay-Adams Hotel, where her room offered stunning views of the Washington Monument in the distance (and the marchers of a gay-rights demonstration much closer by). Floral designer Shawn Nocher of the Floral Studio created beautiful bouquets and arrangements in every shade of orange, red and yellow that fall has to offer. And event planner Kate Beck helped the bride choose beautiful linens and other details to personalize the Oval Room, the swanky restaurant where the foodie couple was married and then celebrated with their guests over a multi-course dinner.

Here are some of my favorites from the day:

01-RegenJohnston_013402-Regen-blog

Claudia checks out her make-up for the first time and loves it.

03-RegenJohnston_002104-RegenJohnston_0069

There are always certain details about my clients’ wedding plans that stick with me from our very first meeting together. With Claudia, it was the red shoes she told me she intended to wear and the birdcage veil she bought for her ceremony. Both looked fabulous on her on her wedding day.

05-RegenJohnston_039606-RegenJohnston_0372bw07-RegenJohnston_037908-RegenJohnston_0332pp

Scott, looking dapper in a formal kilt and tuxedo jacket, poses with his darling daughter, Katie. She brought a couple of friends to the wedding to keep her company.

09-Regen-blog210-RegenJohnston_0257bw

And we were off to the park for some quick portraits in that gorgeous light.

11-RegenJohnston_042712-RegenJohnston_0469bw

There are, obviously, always lots of tourists in DC. That’s even more true on weekends and especially so whenever a demonstration or celebration of some sort draws tens of thousands of people to Washington. Claudia & Scott made appearances in countless strangers’ photographs that afternoon. This man even ran right up to them and had his friend snap a photo with the couple. It was a riot.

13-RegenJohnston_0458

We quickly headed to this less-traveled path in the park — which also happened to be ablaze with fantastic fall foliage.

14-Regen-blog415-RegenJohnston_054816-Regen-blog317-RegenJohnston_0516wiu

Just in front of the fence on the White House lawn…

18-RegenJohnston_0585

I love love love these next three. The contrast in footwear.

19-RegenJohnston_0578

The elegance and sass.

20-RegenJohnston_0599

The obvious love between them.

21-RegenJohnston_0617pp22-RegenJohnston_071423-RegenJohnston_0694bw

And finally, it was off to the Oval Room to get married.

24-Regen-blog525-RegenJohnston_0821

Both Scott & Claudia wrote their own vows to each other. They were just charming. Claudia, for example, thanked Scott and his daughter for welcoming her — and her sizable shoe collection — into their lives.

26-Regen-blog6

Enjoying cocktails on the restaurant’s patio…

27-Regen-blog728-RegenJohnston_125129-Regen-blog830-RegenJohnston_1243bw31-RegenJohnston_1160

The restaurant served as a perfect spot for an intimate wedding dinner.

32-RegenJohnston_0747

There were lots of toasts from the couple’s friends and relatives, prompting both tears and laughter.

33-RegenJohnston_147734-RegenJohnston_1506bw35-RegenJohnston_1521

A first dance. A farewell to some departing friends. And finally, freedom from that fashionable footwear for the bride…

Congratulations, Claudia & Scott. It was a real pleasure working with you on your wedding day!

Not long ago, I spent a wonderful morning photographing little Matias and his parents in their lovely Washington DC apartment. Mom Beverly is a friend of Vero, whose little boy Liam I photographed earlier this spring. About 5 weeks old, baby Matias was sweet and darling and behaved exactly how we hoped he would behave for each segment of our shoot — awake (but adorably yawny) at the beginning, alert and sitting up outside and in the nursery and then a little sleepy and snuggly at the end when the whole family piled into his parents’ bed. Beverly and Patrick were so obviously smitten with their new little one. It was such an enjoyable shoot.

Here are a few of my favorites:

01-MScott_020bw-00802-MScott_059-027

Could they be any more in love with this little boy?

03-MScott_139-05504-MScott_084-03505-MScott_130-04906-MScott_165bw-06607-MScott_161-063

Caught by dad just in time before toppling over…

08-MScott_209-080

I heart little baby feet.

09-MScott_217-084

Beverly & Patrick created such a beautiful, peaceful nursery for their little one. I just loved this mural above the bed.

10-MScott_252-09811-MScott_314bw-11612-MScott_350-127

All alone on his parents’ big bed.

13-MScott_393-14314-MScott_379-137

And here’s what was going on behind me, as I photographed Matias.

15-MScott_371-134

Bev asked me to get a photo of the back of her baby’s head, explaining that she just loves his little curls. Between the curls and the expression on her face, it’s one of my favorites from the day.

16-MScott_479bw-171

Oh so happy…

17-MScott_509-18618-MScott_506-183

I’ve done this before with one other family — the lineup of feet on the end of the bed. I love how it puts the tiny baby in perspective. Look at those little, itty-bitty feet next to his mom and dad’s feet…

19-MScott_454rt-16320-MScott_466rt-166

Beverly & Patrick, congratulations on the wonderful new addition to your lives. I hope to see you all again for another photo shoot when little Matias is perhaps running around a playground and kicking up leaves!           : )

I have been a very bad blogger, lately — but a very busy photographer!

In the last six days, I have shot some silly photos with my husband during a quick week-day trip to Ocean City, two fabulous weddings, a darling 8-week-old baby boy and his parents, and a super fun baseball game under the broiling hot, ultra-humid sun between teams of boys from Baltimore and its sister city of Kawasaki, Japan. Whew! I literally have calluses forming on the thumb of my camera-holding hand.

So there are lots of fun posts coming up. But for now, just a little teaser post…

Blogging chronologically, let’s start in OC. Since my husband and I are expecting our first baby in November/December-ish, we wanted to take a little trip together. I asked him to take me to Paris. We ended up at my parents’ condo at the beach. Almost the same, really. Anyhow, we had lots of fun and got to spend one day with our friends, Rick & Erin, who were celebrating Rick’s 30th birthday with a surprise sky-diving adventure. We obviously did not join them for that — no pregnant ladies jumping out of airplanes, thank you very much. But we beached and mini-golfed and hit the boardwalk for a little arcade and carousel fun.

My cute husband…

Erin celebrating a great skee ball toss…

OceanCity_026

Kevin was grumpy because he picked a carousel horse that did not go up and down.

OceanCity_156

I’m pretty sure the carousel was still standing still at this point…   : )

OceanCity_145

A dizzying self-portrait on the carousel.

The birthday tiramisu.

I love this one of Rick & Erin. Unbeknownst to Erin, she was about to get engaged three days after this photo was taken. So sweet…OceanCity_010

Next stop: Wedding No. 1 of the weekend. Courtney & Ned exchanged vows in a simply lovely ceremony at the same church where my husband and I were married nearly five years ago. For anyone looking for a warm, welcoming Catholic church, Corpus Christi in Bolton Hill is an excellent choice. Courtney & Ned are both school teachers and couldn’t have looked happier together on their wedding day — despite the downpour that ruined our plans for a stroll around the beautiful grounds of the Hayfields Country Club for pictures during their cocktail hour. Here are just a few of my favorites from my initial edit:

While getting ready, Courtney placed a quick phone call to her husband-to-be. “Hey there. Whatcha doin’?” she asked.

CHectus_0112

They had a whole flock of darling children as flower girls and ring bearers.

CHectus_kids

The bride, looking gorgeous…

CHectus_0413

Courtney’s girls helped fluff all the crinoline under her beautiful gown before she left for the church.

CHectus_0454bw

Her dad, giving her away: “Well, I guess she’s all yours,” he told Ned.

CHectus_0707CHectus_0809CHectus_1356

The tables at the Hayfields were decorated with these stunningly simple arrangements of roses. So lovely…

CHectus_0226CHectus_1709

The kids couldn’t get enough of the groom. This went on for about 10 minutes before he finally shook himself free!

CHectus_1885

And a very well choreographed first dance.

CHectus_1646bw

Congratulations Courtney & Ned. I can’t wait to get a proper blog post up soon from your big day!

Moving along… On Monday, I had the pleasure of photographing little Matias with his parents, Bev & Patrick. They say he’s never as good as he was during our photo shoot. I simply don’t believe it. Could he be any cuter?

MScott_037MScott_108MScott_390MScott_429gts

These are parents who completely and utterly adore their new little boy. Throughout our morning together, they rarely took their eyes off him. And how wonderful is this mural in the nursery?

MScott_242

I can’t wait to share more pictures from our shoot together. It was so fun!

Last but not least, I spent a very sweaty afternoon at the Johns Hopkins University campus, where two teams of boys — one from Baltimore and one from Kawasaki, Japan — were playing in the 30th Anniversary Baseball All-Star Game. In honor of the cities’ three-decade-long relationship, Kawasaki sent their best youth baseball team to play a Charm City all-star team. Twenty years ago, a Baltimore team traveled to Japan for a similar game. And the two cities are planning for another Baltimore team to make the trip next year. I’m pretty sure they’ll need a photographer to accompany them, don’t you think?!?

Here’s a little sneak peak at the full blog post that will be coming soon:

BaltKawasaki_0262BaltKawasaki_0339BaltKawasaki_0075BaltKawasaki_0880BaltKawasaki_homeplalte

So these two boys were standing as close as they could get to the Kawasaki dugout, seeking autographs. Told that the players wouldn’t be able to sign anything until after the game, the boys decided to stay put and cheer from the fence line for the Kawasaki player at bat. Who promptly hit a grand slam. The two boys went nuts cheering.

BaltKawasaki_0377BaltKawasaki_0384

The Kawasaki team was pretty happy about the four-run homer, too.

BaltKawasaki_0405BaltKawasaki_0115BaltKawasaki_0682

All done with the game, the boys from both teams got together for one final set of photos — and tossed all their hats in the air.

BaltKawasaki_1063

What a fun job I have. I really love the mix of people and events I’ve been shooting lately. I promise to get full blog posts up as soon as I can. But I hope you enjoyed this preview of what’s to come!

Brace yourselves: This is going to be a loooooong blog post.

I recently had the pleasure of photographing the two-day wedding celebration of one of my most wonderful and dearest friends. Ale and I first met in the summer of 1997 at the University of Maryland’s planning meeting for everyone studying abroad that following semester in Florence, Italy. The organizers suggested that students choose people to live with at that gathering, since most everyone would be finding their own apartments in Italy. While bunches of shrieking girls ran around the room hugging their friends, three less hysterical strangers and I gravitated toward each other. That’s how Ale and I became friends. She, our good friend Ghi and I (and another woman who we didn’t keep in touch with after the semester ended) shared a magnificent apartment — we called it a quasi-palazzo — just off the Piazza della Republica and just around the corner from Il Duomo in bella Firenze. It was a fantastic four months. And Ale and I have been amiche ever since!

So it was with great joy — and almost as much giddiness as those crazy girls running around the room at the Florence planning meeting — that I offered to photograph her nuptials to Danish. They are wonderful for each other. Both tall and willowy, they make for a striking couple. And in terms of personality, they couldn’t be a better match. As intense and stress-prone as Ale can be, her beau is equal parts mellow and soothing. When nerves and worries threatened to give Ale one of her terrible stomachaches on the way to the courthouse the morning of their wedding, Danish suggested they exchange their own personal vows — just the two of them — right there in the metro car. How sweet is that?

And their wedding? Talk about an international affair. Ale is originally from Colombia, Danish from Pakistan. Friends flew in from California and Bogota. The bride’s sister — unable to make the trip — listened in on the ceremony via cell phone from Trinidad & Tobago. And the groom’s relatives received text message updates and mobile phone photos in Pakistan, where it seemed the whole family passed the phone around to share their good wishes with the couple.

Anyways, let’s get to the photos.

01-Paschke_0006-blog

We all laughed as we had to pass the custody and paternity testing offices on the way to the marriage bureau. But this sign was the funniest.

02-Paschke_0028bw-blog

The ceremony room is decorated with these, um, let’s say kitschy silk flower arches. But seriously, could these two look any happier?

Ale’s sister listens in from afar as the couple exchanges vows.

Some fun, quick portraits with the couple’s friends who attended the ceremony. I even handed off my camera and jumped in the last one.

And then we handed off my camera to some stranger for a big group shot!

33-Paschke_0436-blog34-Paschke_0443-blog

By now, Ale was hot. And hungry. And didn’t want to be bothered with any more photos. I reminded her that we didn’t have any of her and her new husband alone. Thankfully, she agreed to a few more. Because I love this series of the two of them — their smiles, the looks they exchange. What a beautiful couple….

And they’re off to enjoy a romantic lunch as husband and wife…

42-Paschke_0530-blog

The next day, a much larger group of friends and family gathered at Ale’s parents’ beautiful home in Bethesda to celebrate Ale & Danish’s marriage. There was music and live performances by the bride and her friends and the groom’s friends. There was food from Latin America and Pakistan. There were toasts and tears, poems and cigars and lots and lots of laughter. In other words, the perfect celebration. Here, the groom and his friends arrive in a traditional processional. One of Danish’s close friends made the men’s shawls herself, coordinating the colors to match Ale’s dress. They were beautiful.

43-Paschke_0585-blog44-Paschke_0587bw-blog

“The groom is here. The groom is here!” Ale shouted when Danish arrived.

45-Paschke_0605-blog

I forgot to mention: The guest list included some of the most darling children I’ve ever seen. I could have photographed this sweet little boy all day long.

46-Paschke_0559-blog47-Paschke_0869gts-blog

Vero drops in on the party from Trinidad via Skype. Ale’s mom marched the laptop around the house so she could say hello to all the guests. So fun! And so 21st Century.  : )

48-Paschke_0903-blog

Later, the bride and her friends and the groom’s friends offered dueling performances. The girls reenacted the audition scene from the very end of Flashdance. In a so-funny-it-almost-seemed-planned accident, there was a glitch with the music —  just like there was in the movie. Not missing a beat, Cristina begged her audience for a second chance — just like Jennifer Beals does in the movie with the audition board!

49-Paschke_0701-blog50-Paschke_0705-blog

The little girls wanted to get in on the fun, too.

And then it was time for the groom’s friends’ performance.
